New Plant Varieities: Food Safety - Regulation - Consultation
P. COURNOYER (1) (1) U.S. Food and Drug Administration, U.S.A.

Plant defense research can translate to new plant varieties with enhanced resistance to pests and diseases. When moving discoveries from the lab bench to the dinner plate, developers of new plant varieties have a responsibility under the U.S. Federal Food Drug & Cosmetic Act to ensure that food is safe and complies with the law. This legal responsibility applies to developers of new plant varieties, irrespective of the breeding method used. Because the safety and regulatory issues associated with food developed using innovative methods may not be clear, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that developers consult with the agency to ensure all safety or regulatory issues are resolved before the food enters commerce. Here we present (1) the safety and regulatory considerations for food produced from new plant varieties and (2) the consultation programs at FDA available to developers of new plant varieties.
