Remembering Dr. Michael Mishkind and Honoring His Legacy

01SocNews_Mishkind.jpgThis past May, we lost Dr. Michael Mishkind, well-known to the IS-MPMI community as a program director at the United States National Science Foundation (NSF). Michael's leadership was instrumental in establishing and maintaining MPMI research in the United States over the last 20 years. His support and advocacy for broad thematic representation and engagement in our field were vital. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire and impact future generations of researchers.

Throughout the years, Michael was a strong supporter of IS-MPMI in many ways, such as funding equitable Congress travel awards, providing counsel on research proposals, and mentoring multiple IS-MPMI members at the NSF. In honor of Michael and his dedication to these key areas, with the support of former colleagues, friends, IS-MPMI members, and staff, our Board of Directors has established Michael Mishkind Travel Grants to support the travel of early-career researchers to IS-MPMI events.

Following the official announcement and call for donations at our recent IS-MPMI Congress in Rhode Island, we received a generous $10,000 donation from an anonymous benefactor. We hope to match that donation with your support.

Whether you served on a panel with Michael, received his guidance as you prepared a successful grant proposal, or were touched in other ways by Michael's discerning intellect and quiet, constructive manner, we hope that you will consider donating to Michael Mishkind Travel Grants in Michael's memory and share this call with others who may wish to contribute. Thank you for considering this request and honoring Michael Mishkind's legacy.

Sincerely,

Roger Innes
On behalf of the IS-MPMI Board of Directors
